David Louis Rice

April 21, 1936 ~ January 29, 2017 (age 80) 80 Years Old

David Louis Rice, 80, of Elkhart, died on Sunday, January 29 at his home.

David was born on April 21, 1936.

He was preceded in death by his parents J. C. Rice and Mary Louise Rice, and by his eldest brother Robert Rice, and sisters-in-law, Bonnie Rice and Barbara Rice.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Christine Paulson Rice, whom he married on October 19, 1963 in Elkhart, daughter, Cicely Rice- Kohlmeier (Kevin), South Bend, son Andy Rice (Dawn), Elkhart, granddaughters Sabrina and Tabitha Kohlmeier and brothers Thomas Rice, Lafayette, and William Rice (Betty) Elkhart.

David was a 1954 graduate of Elkhart High School and a 1959 graduate of Ball State University. He gave the invocation at his college commencement.

He loved his family, his kitty, and Elkhart. He was a loyal member of the First Presbyterian Church, and loved singing tenor or bass in his church choir. He also served as Ruling elder, Deacon and Trustee for the church. David loved IU basketball and cruising in his speed boat. He was a charter member for the Jumping Joes Ski Club and served on the Elkhart Breakfast Exchange Club.

Early in his career, David managed Easy Shopping Place and Elkhart Monument. He then served as controller for the Elkhart YMCA and YWCA. He also worked for many years for T. R. A. & Associates, which is where he retired from.  For the past 20 years, Dave also served as the regional leader for Primerica, an investment company.


Friends may call from 10 am until the celebration of life at 12 pm (Noon), Thursday, February 2, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at a later date.


In lieu of flowers, please consider giving in his memory to the J.C. Rice Scholarship Fund, The First Presbyterian Church Foundation, or The Notre Dame Children’s Choir.
