Delvin L. “Del” Landis, 85, of Elkhart, died Monday, February 13, 2017 at Elkhart General Hospital.
Del was born on July 17, 1931 in Jones, MI to the late Edgar and Alta (Tavernier) Landis. On July 18, 1964, he married Ada Ruth Williams in Elkhart.
Del is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth of Elkhart; a daughter, Wendi Talkington (Sean), South Bend; sons, Mark Landis (Carolyn), Elkhart, Randy Landis (Denise), Elkhart, and Steve Landis (Theresa), Flushing, MI; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sister, Bonnie McCollough (Keith), Elkhart, and a brother, Gene Landis, Elkhart.
He was preceded in death by 3 sisters, and 2 brothers.
A star athlete in high school, Del was awarded ten varsity letters for his participation in football, basketball, and baseball at Elkhart High School, graduating in 1951. He was inducted into the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame several years ago. In his spare time, he enjoyed bowling and fishing. But most of all, he loved his family.
Del proudly served in the United States Army.
A master mason, Del retired after 50 years. Some of his work may be found throughout the area including Notre Dame Stadium, Penn High School, North Side Middle School, Concord Mall, and the College Football Hall of Fame.
Friends may call from 4 pm until 8 pm, Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1:30 pm Friday, February 17, 2017 at the Jesus Christ Church of the Latter-Day Saints. Entombment will be in Rice Cemetery where military honors will be rendered
