Alice M. Bauman, 90, of Elkhart, died Saturday morning, June 15, 2019 at Green House Village in Goshen.
Alice was born September 7, 1928 in Bakersfield, CA to the late David and Frieda (Enns) Nikkel. As Alice Nikkel, she married Clarence Bauman, professor of ethics at the Anabaptist Mennonite Seminary, on August 27, 1954 in Shafter, CA. Clarence died August 20, 1995.
Alice studied at Biola University in La Mirada, CA. She also studied at UCLA where she majored in English literature and psychology. She later studied in Detmold, Germany at the music academy; DePaul University where she studied piano; University of Edinburgh where she studied history and also in Jerusalem with the Martin Buber Dialogical Society
She taught piano for many years in British Columbia, Bad Godesberg, Germany as well as Elkhart. She was also very instrumental in assisting her husband for six years in Bonn, Germany with the East/West Peace Relations. Alice also enjoyed reading and was active with the Great Books Discussion Club. She and Clarence started and facilitated a Silent Meeting in Elkhart. Her latter years were spent at the edge of a seminary campus in the Hermitage praying after the manner of Russian Poustinia.
Private services will be held at a later date. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
