Jack Cooper Obituary

Jack R. Cooper, 83, of Elkhart, died on Thursday, November 15, 2018, at Elkhart General Hospital, where he had been admitted earlier in the week.

He was born July 5, 1935, in Elkhart to the late Marvin L. and Fannie B. (Harker) Cooper.  He was also preceded in death by five brothers: Charlie, Bob, Ernie, Larry, and Bill, and four sisters: Mary, Miriam, Deloris, and Patricia.

On September 14, 1968, in Elkhart, Jack married the former Sharon F. Truesdell.  Sharon died January 9, 2016.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Rebecca D. Cooper, and her husband, Jeremy Place, of Grand Rapids, MI.

Jack was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 34 years, retiring in 2000.  He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, local 547, and an avid golfer, recording three holes-in-one (two at Raber Golf Course and one at Old Orchard).  He also went skydiving with his daughter and son-in-law at Mt. Pleasant, MI, and took a hot air balloon ride from Elkhart to Goshen.  Jack was also an artist who enjoyed working with oil paint as well as drawing with pencils.

There will be no visitation or services.  Cremation will take place.  Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Because of Jack’s love of golf, memorial contributions may be made to The First Tee, 425 S. Legacy Trail, St. Augustine, FL 32092 or by visiting www.thefirsttee.org, an organization that teaches young people how to play golf, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
