James Slocum Obituary

James “Jim” Henry Slocum, age 75, died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at home.

He was born in South Bend, Indiana on December 3,1942 to Clyde Orville and Lucille Maude (Short) Slocum.  He was one of seven children.

He married Cheryl Kaye Davidson on March 16, 1963 in Elkhart, Indiana.

Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife, and his children, Wendy (David) Ellis, Cindy (Bradley) Skaggs and Tracy (Brian) Bussard.  Jim will also be fondly remembered by his nine grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jennifer, Joshua (Abigail), Jonathan (Amy) Ellis, Zachary, Kaylyn Bussard, Victoria, Shealey, and Travis Skaggs, his great-grandchildren, Titus, Jonas, Sarie, Anastasia, Reece & Geneva Ellis as well as his brothers Clyde (Patti) and Tom (Kathy).  Jim was preceeded in death by his parents, brothers Patrick and Gerald and sisters Joan and Patricia.

Jim attended both Jimtown and Penn High Schools and designed the original Penn Mascot logo for the gymnasium floor.  Over his lifetime Jim was involved in many activities including Thursday evening bowling league at Country Club Lanes, fishing trips with family and friends and golfing with his buddies.  His favorite times though were spent with his grandchildren supporting each of them in their various interests.

In 1974, Jim opened Trophy Tops, a truck cover business, designing his own unique style for both aluminum and wood frame truck covers.  He was the builder, delivery driver and salesman, working with his brothers and others at various times.  He closed the business in 1986 and went to work for and retired from Jason Industries.

Viewing will be Sunday, May 13, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.  A funeral service in memory of Jim will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home with Pastor Phil Byars officiating.  Interment will follow at Olive Cemetery in Elkhart County.
