John Walter Sands, 88, of Elkhart, died October 17, 2018 in Millers Merry Manor, Wakarusa, IN. He was born April 7, 1930 in Elkhart, to John W.E. and Ruth (Walter) Sands. He married Louise (Santucci) Sands on Dec. 29, 1951. She survives along with his son, John Wm. Sands (Marsha Lambright), a Grandson, John “Tony” Anthony (Jessica) Sands, Granddaughter Britney Sands, Great Grandchildren, Quincy Monroe Sands, John James Sands, Clara Jodi Sands, Daughter in law, Gail Sands, and Nephews, David, John, and William Bates. He was preceded in death by a Granddaughter, Jodi Sands, and Sister, Barbara Muir.
John graduated from Elkhart High School in 1947. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Ball State University, and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from The University of Notre Dame.
Mr. Sands proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1948-1952. He was an air-sea rescue boat coxswain at the Naval Air Station Quonset Point followed by assignment to The USS Sperry in San Diego. He had the privilege to transport Admiral Forrest P. Sherman, the Secretary Of The Navy, as well as many other dignitaries during his tour of duty.
John’s 18-year teacher/guidance counselor career was at Penn High School and Concord Community Schools. He served as President and Vice President of the Concord Community School Board of Education. In 1973 he established Sands Realty and sold real estate until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the Dunlap Lions club where he was a Melvin Jones fellow. He held all officer positions in the Club including President and chairman. He served as President of Elkhart County cancer Society and Chairman of the loan committee for ELCOS Credit Union.
John loved to travel, play golf and be outdoors.
Visitation will be Friday, November 9, 2018 from 5-7 PM at Hartzler Gutermuth Inman Funeral Home, Funeral Service will be 10:30 AM Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Funeral Home, with Pastor Greg Serafino officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Prairie Street Cemetery.
