Robert G. Banker

Robert G. Banker, 92, of Elkhart, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at home.

Robert was born on October 21, 1924 in Elkhart to Elijah and Martha (Hoeckele) Banker. On September 12, 1981, he married Marylou (Pontius) Long. She survives along with loving family, Shelley Knauf, Stefan Knauf, Gregory Knauf, Stephanie (Hahn) Knauf, Gary Long, Sarah Elston, Jacob Elston, Joshua Elston, and Michael Long.

During his youth, Robert was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Robert was a member of the United States Army, serving in Germany and France during World War II. Robert spent a lifetime devoted to our community and civil service. He held a life time membership with the Jr. Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycee’s serving as a Soap Box Derby Director in 1965. He was involved with Junior Achievement from 1964 until 1965. He held a life time membership with the Optimist International, which he joined in 1965. In 1968 he joined the Evening Optimist Club, where he served as a chairman, past president and earned Optimist of the Year twice.

Robert owned and operated Hoeckele Auto Supply from 1946-1986. He later worked in sales part time with Northside Auto Parts.

Friends may call from 4 pm until 7 pm, Friday, March 17, 2017 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Evening Optimist Club.
