Audrey Jane Modjeska, 89, passed away Friday, January 1st 2016 at Greenleaf living center where she had been a resident for the last year and a half. Audrey was born in Wakarusa on July 7, 1926 to Mearl and Anna Mary Buzzard. She was a part of Wakarua's graduating class of 1944. She began working at Moore's dry cleaners in 1945, where she met her future husband Walter Modjeska. Audrey and Walt married on April 30, 1949, they resided in their home in Elkhart, and had two sons Randy and Rick. Audrey loved adventure. Her and Walt traveled frequently. They owned a cabin in the U.P. where they spent a lot of time and made countless memories with family and friends. Audrey loved being outdoors and working in her garden. She always had a smile on her face. In her later years she enjoyed reminiscing, storytelling, and looking at her old photos. She was loved by many and cherished every friendship and relationship she had with a great depth. For the last 2 years her great granddaughter, Hadlee, provided her with much entertainment, love, and the motivation to keep her going through the physical pains of aging. Audrey leaves behind a legacy of extreme pride in her family, an overwhelming love of life, and heart of gold that radiated pure goodness. Audrey is survived by her son Rick (Amy) Modjeska, granddaughter Kristen (Seth) Baldridge, grandson Dusten (Shelby) Modjeska, sisters Deanie (Kelly) Hunsberger, Cheryl (Darrell) Schwartz, great granddaughter Hadlee Baldridge, two step-granddaughters Lindsay (Christian) Radabaugh, Kayleigh (Eric) Haines, several nieces & nephews, and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband Walt, son Randy, sister Phyllis, and great granddaughter Bailey. A memorial service is scheduled for January 23, 2016, 11:30 at Trinity United Methodist Church at 2715 Jackson Blvd. in Elkhart. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service from 10 a.m.-11:30. Memorial donations can be made in Audrey's name to Greenleaf living center 1201 E. Beardsley ave. where the family hopes to provide a celebration of life meal for the staff that took such good care of her.
