He married Bette Louis Mathis of Elkhart on September 22, 1940 at Central Christian Church. A beloved husband, grandfather and great grandfather, he was devoted to his family and an inspiring presence in their lives.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years; daughters Ann Dean Nordman of Louisville and Jennifer Michael Salvador of Alpharetta, Georgia; granddaughters Amy Isaac Porter of Catonsville, Maryland; Angela Mark Youngman of Louisville; Stacy James Beck of Lawrenceville, Georgia; and grandson Stephen Beth Salvador of Baltimore, Maryland; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was a cherished brother and was preceded in death by eight sisters.
Graduating from Elkhart High School in 1937, Mr. Prugh first worked as a clarinet repairman at H&A Selmer, Inc. Earning a degree in accounting from La Salle University, he worked in the accounting department of Adams-Westlake. From there he moved to Uniroyal Ball Band in Mishawaka, Indiana where he remained for 43 years, retiring as assistant controller in 1984.
In addition to his professional success, Mr. Prugh was active in both his church and community. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he served and supported many committees. He formerly was a lay speaker for Simpson United Methodist Church. He also tutored numerous children within the Elkhart County school system and continued that service well into his 80's. Mr. Prugh is a lifetime member of the Elk's Lodge # 425, as well as a free mason with the Kane Masonic Lodge #183. As a young man he was also an active member of the Masonic Order of DeMolay. He was a past president of Toastmasters. He was a generous supporter of charitable causes, among them Church Community Services.
Mr. Prugh was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Cubs. As a younger man, he was fond of golf and bowling. In later years, he enjoyed playing cards with friends, and participating in his high school class reunions. However, his family acknowledges his greatest passion was the love and caretaking of his yard and flowers.
Mr. Prugh was a gentle and compassionate man. He loved and valued his family and friends. He was known to be quiet and reflective, yet resolute in disposition. He was a man of integrity, and was often the voice of reason amidst confusion. He had an ingratiating smile, quick wit and an endearing soul, which likely earned him the nickname "Cuddles."
