Obituary

Donald Ellsworth Kiser, Sr., 93, a life-long resident of Elkhart, Indiana went home to be with his Savior on June 24, 2016. He was born on September 17, 1922 to the union of David and Ethelyn Kiser. Donald enlisted in the Army Air Corp 8th Air Force at the age of 22 and served overseas until 1945. He served valiantly in World War II, as a Ball Turret gunner on a B17 aircraft. He flew in 29 missions during the WWII campaign and shared many stories about his time as he was serving his country. He was so proud to be an American and was a true hero. In March of 2013 he was publicly honored for his service by the State of Indiana on the Senate floor in Indianapolis with a standing ovation. It was truly a highlight of his life. He loved animals and enjoyed raising miniature horses following his retirement from Adams-Westlake after 36 years of service where he was a meticulous record keeper. He was an excellent athlete. Some of his accomplishments include playing baseball and softball for 16 years in the Industrial League. He bowled with the Adlake factory team for many years and was a member of the 4 Lakes Golf Club for 38 years. Donald was a star golfer and had at least one hole in one on his record. He was a volunteer for the Red Cross during the mid 60's where he served as disaster chairman and also served on the Board of Directors for 3 years. He was a longstanding and proud member of the Elkhart County Pony Express Riders of Indiana where he served as both President and Vice President of the Elkhart County Chapters. A huge John Wayne fan- not only had he seen every one of his movies but he was proud of the life size cutout of the movie star that he kept in his room. He was a big baseball fan and could hardly wait until spring, for the season to start. Donald was preceded in death by his son Donald Kiser Jr. in 2011. Also preceding him in death are his parents, his brothers, David, and Orville and sisters Catherine, Glennora, and Oleta. Survivors include his daughter, Susan K. Hill of Johnson City, TN. Also surviving are his Granddaughter, Debra (Jack) Williams Gray, TN Grandson, Stephen Zollinger Gray, TN, Granddaughter Shelly (Anthony) Maguire Breckenridge CO, Great Granddaughter Jessica (Scott) Denney Kingsport, TN Great Grandson Andrew (Crystal) Williams Gray, TN, Great Grandson Matthew Zolinger Gray, TN, Great grandson Ryder Maguire Breckenridge, CO, He was also the proud Great Great Grandfather of Cole & Connor Denney and Riley Williams of Kingsport, TN. He is also survived by his loving friends and caregivers, John and Joy Sholty of Granger, IN. Donald was proud to be a resident of the Hubbard Hill Community and the family wishes to thank the nursing and administrative staff for the excellent care, concern and love they gave him during his final years. His doctor once asked him, was he happy? And he replied "I live at Hubbard Hill!! How could I not be?!" A funeral service will be held at the Hubbard Hill Chapel, 28070 County Rd 24 West Elkhart, IN at 11:00 AM on Wednesday June 29, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Prairie Street Cemetery following the service, where an honor guard will perform funeral honors. In lieu of flowers, the preferred memorial is the Hubbard Hill Angel Gardens and Van fund.
