Obituary

Dorothy H. Overpeck, 86, of Elkhart, died Friday morning, May 3, 2019 at her home after an illness.

She was born February 24, 1933 in Millhousen, IN to the late Louis and Martha (Rolfes) Luken.  Also preceding her in death was her husband, two brothers; Bert and Carl Luken and one sister, Marion Hunter.

As Dorothy Luken, she married Carl Overpeck on September 1, 1951 in Greensburg, IN.  Together they enjoyed traveling to many interesting places, including a trip to Myanamar with Dorothy's sister Rita in the year 2000.  Carl died April 30, 2013.  Surviving are two daughters; Sue Williams of Elkhart and Carole Backman of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI: one son, Todd E. Overpeck of Elkhart; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one sister, Rita Burkert and one brother, Kenneth Luken, both of Greensburg.

Dorothy graduated from Greensburg High School and also from Indiana University at South Bend where she received her master's degree in Education.  She was a school teacher with the Elkhart Community School system, teaching at Beardsley Elementary school.  Dorothy was also a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and volunteered at the Woodlawn Nature Center where she also served as treasurer.  She enjoyed reading, golfing, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren outdoors.

Visitation for Dorothy will be on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 11:00 am until noon at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.  At noon, an informal service will be held where the family will share memories of Dorothy.  Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wellfield Botanic Gardens 1011 N. Main St. Elkhart, IN 46514.
