Douglas L. "Doug" Wirt, 74, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday morning, June 2nd, 2016 at Elkhart General Hospital. Doug was born in Mishawaka, IN on September 15, 1941 to the late Fred E. and Carolyn A. (Gill) Wirt. On May 5, 2005, he married Terri L. Miller in Elkhart. She survives along with his sons: Kevin L. Wirt, Jon P. (Amanda) Wirt and Mitch A. (Layla) Wirt, all of Elkhart; a step-daughter, Christy (Tom) Green of Elkhart; a step-son, Ryan Wireman of South Bend; 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and two brothers, his twin, Dennis Wirt of Elkhart and Gregg (Pam) Wirt of Paso Robles, CA. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Nicole Black and a sister-in-law, Rita Wirt. Doug was employed in the recreational vehicle industry in Elkhart for many years. He worked for Elixir Industries where he served as a plant manager as well as division manager. He retired from Mishawaka Sheet Metal several years ago as the vice president of manufacturing. A fan of sports, Doug enjoyed watching his Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox whenever they were playing. He was also a fan of NASCAR and the University of Michigan as well. He was most happy outside working in his flower gardens or tending to his well-manicured lawn. However, his favorite pastime was spending the afternoon fishing with his brother, Dennis. Visitation for Doug will be held on Monday, June 6th from 4 until 7 at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 7:00 with Lon Munlin officiating.
