Obituary

Harold A. Stone Hal passed away at 2:00 P.M. on March 27, 2010 after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma. Hal was born in Anderson, Indiana on April 11, 1931 to Roscoe and Dorotha Hottinger Stone. On May 3, 1957 he married Catherine Olbricht, who passed away on December 22, 2005. Hal is survived by one brother, Richard Stone of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and his children Eric Monica Stone of Hampton VA, Rev. Alex Carla Stone, of Hammond, IN and Catherine Kenn McEndarfer of Elkhart. Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive him. Hal graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1949 and attended IU Southeastern Center, before graduating from the University of Louisville with a B.S. in Chemistry. Before retiring as Director of Analytical and Research Services from Miles/Bayer in 1993 after 33 years of service, he was employed as a chemist for Colgate-Palmolive and then Whitehall Laboratory. He was a longtime member of the American Chemical Society. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951 and went to boot camp at Paris Island SC, and then to Camp Pendleton CA. He was in the 29th Replacement Draft to Korea in 1953 and assigned to the 1st Armored Amphibian Battalion of the 1st Marine Division. After his retirement, he and Catherine moved to Sebring and Lake Placid, FL for eight years before Catherine was stricken with Alzheimer's disease and they returned home to Elkhart. He and Catherine loved to travel, and frequented Canada, Mexico, Germany, and Austria, and traveled nine cruises throughout the Caribbean. Hal enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge and poker, and he and Catherine could be found on many afternoons playing cribbage. Hal had a little dog named Jenna that he loved very much. In fact, Jenna was laying by his side as he went to Heaven on Saturday. Hal was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist church where he served in many capacities throughout the years, and is a current member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Tuesday at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday at Hillcrest United Methodist Church with the Reverend James Fookes officiating. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, Multiple Myeloma Foundation, or Hospice in Elkhart.
