Henry Lee Gates, 74, of Elkhart, died Sunday, July 10, 2016 at Elkhart General Hospital. Henry was born November 12, 1941 in Mississippi to Bernandrew and Emma (Thompson) Gates. On May 2, 2009 he married Angel M. Brownlee. She survives. Henry is also survived by daughters Eva Jackson (Jerel), Mary Anderson, Dorothy Gates, all of Elkhart, Juanita Gates, Marrietta, GA and a step-daughter Necoma Brownlee, Stone Mountain, GA; 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Jackie Harris, Dorothy Harris (Alonzo), Diane Causey (M.L.), Emma McCaster (Earl), all of Elkhart, Mary Alice Tate (Donald), South Bend and brothers, Louis Gates, Willie Walter Gates (Erma) Willie Joe Gates, and Jimmy Gates (Delores), all of Elkhart. Henry was preceded in death by his first wife, Savannah Gates, a sister, Myrtis Gates, brothers, Clarence, James L., and Willie Lee Gates. Henry was a member of Agape Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and watching TV, especially sports. He was an avid hunter and played on the Minority Merchants Softball Team. He was employed for 40 years will Elkhart Foundry until his retirement in 2001. Friends may call from 12 (Noon) until the time of service at 1 pm, Friday, July 15, 2016 at Agape Missionary Church with Reverend Dr. Dannell Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Street Church.
