Jean E. Murray, 84, of Elkhart, died on Monday, February 27, 2017 at her residence surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

Jean was born on July 4, 1932 in Mishawaka to the late J. Ralph and Florence A. (Borst) Carwin.  She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Dr. Charles D. Hoyt Jr. and a great grandson, Mathew E. Niemi.

As Jean Carwin, she married Clifford A. Murray on December 27, 1953 in Rockville, IN.  He survives along with their children: Pamela (Chauncey) Baldwin of Crystal Lake, IL, Janet (Marty) Freeman of Mishawaka, Rebecca Murray Thompson of Elkhart, Robert (Monica) Murray of Alpharetta, GA; eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Jean graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1950 and attended Indiana University in Bloomington prior to leaving for nursing school at St. Anthony Hospital in Terre Haute, IN.  She had been employed by Dr. M. H. Kesim as well as the Elkhart Clinic.  She was an active member of the First Congregational Church where she served as Chairman of the Chancel committee for many years.  She also served on the Cystic Fibrosis Board and was a former member of the Four Arts Club as well as the Elkhart General Hospital Auxiliary.

Visitation for Jean will be held on Thursday, March 2nd from 3 until 7 at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.  Private family burial will take place.  A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, March 3rd at 2:00, also at the funeral home.  The Reverend Mark Mikel will officiate.

In memory of Jean, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart or to the Elkhart County Humane Society.
