Joan L. Clayborn, 80, of Elkhart, IN passed away the morning of Wednesday, September 10, 2025 in her home.

Joan was born on October 6, 1944 in South Bend, IN to the late Glen and Lela Mae Richards.

On November 29, 1980, Joan was united in marriage to Ken Clayborn.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ken Clayborn, as well as her step-daughter, Rebecca (Ken Schmidt) Clayborn and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lindsay (Mike) Losch as well as two brothers Dr. Dean Richards M.D. and Dr. Gene Richards M.D.

Joan graduated from Manchester College with the Class of 1966 and received her Bachelor of Science degree. She went on to work as a chemist for Miles/Bayer, where she was employed for 40 years before her retirement.

When she wasn't working, Joan enjoyed cross-stitching and other needle work, as well as reading.  Joan had a passion for animal rights and participated in projects with the Humane Society of Elkhart. She was a member of Beta Alpha Chi Sorority, the South Bend Symphonic Choir, the Goshen Community Chorale, and Golden Beats. She was also a loyal member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Elkhart (UUFE).

Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, and friend, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service for Joan will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W Franklin St, Elkhart, IN 46516 with visitation for two hours prior. Joan will be laid to rest at Rice Cemetery at a later date. She is being cremated and her ashes will be interred in Glory #1 Columbarium.
