Joan Dee Oldfather, 80, of Shipshewana and formerly of Elkhart, died Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Elkhart General Hospital.
Joan was born on October 3, 1935 in Elkhart to Arden D and Hazel Bernetta (Eger) Bratton. On September 13, 1953 she married Ruskin Ray Oldfather at her parents' home in Elkhart.. They were married for 30 years.
Joan is survived by her children, Lucinda (Kevin) King, Elkhart, and Frederick (Jenée) Oldfather, Mooresville, IN; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sandra Kay Bratton Burns (Ron), Port Richey, FL, and a daughter-in-law, Dana Oldfather, Madison, AL. She was preceded in death by sons, Duane D. Oldfather in 2010 and Andrew Ruskin Oldfather, who died in infancy.
Joan was a 1953 graduate of Elkhart High School and was active in her children's lives, serving as a Girl Scout Leader for 10 years and assisting also as a home room mother. She sewed all of her family's clothes for many years. She owned and operated a natural food store for 2 and a half years and also co-owned Oldfather Canoe Center. Joan was employed by Naquin Chevrolet for 2 years as a credit manager, and most recently drove an escort car for a transportation company for 20 years.
Joan had many passions in her life, including reading, entertaining at her home, flowers and baking.
Private family services for Joan will be held.
