Brumbaugh
April 30, 1923 – December 16, 2016
John S. Brumbaugh, 93, passed into the loving arms of his Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, December 16th at his home.
He was born in Elkhart on April 30, 1923 to the late Ralph and Martha Fay (Hess-Jay) Brumbaugh. Also preceding him in death were a daughter, Carol in 1975 and a brother, Paul in 1925.
John married Barbara Menges at Trinity Lutheran Church on May 21, 1967. She survives along with a son Ken Brumbaugh, from his first marriage to Mickey Hursh Baker, a son, Paul (Emily) Brumbaugh, a daughter, Joanna (Chris) Jacobsen and three grandchildren; Brittany and Johnathon Brumbaugh and Tyler John Jacobsen.
John graduated from Elkhart High School in 1943. He served with the United States Navy in the Asiatic Pacific from 1943 to 1946. He also served aboard the USS San Marcos from February 1951 to November 1952. He worked at the Indiana and Michigan Electric Company, retiring in 1989 after almost 40 years as a lineman and meter electrician. John was a boy scout in his youth but continued as Explorer Troop Leader and went to Philmont scout training ranch on a scholarship. He volunteered with RETA when they first moved into their building on High Street. He also received the Helping Hand Volunteer Award from ADEC in 1990.
John was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkhart as well as Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Goshen where he was a member. He was known for his love of his Savior and his family. He was also an active volunteer in the church having been in the choir and also serving as an usher and on several other committees. He taught Bible school for over 20 years. He and Barbara volunteered for 9 years at Lutheran World Relief/Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Maryland and they also were active with Lutheran World Relief, delivering commodities from the area to Grand Rapids, MI and Indianapolis for many years. John was willing to help wherever he was needed and was the "master" person in the neighborhood for his tools and expertise and always fixing whatever needed to be fixed.
Visitation for John will be held on Tuesday, December 20 from 4 until 7 at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21st at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Goshen. Private family burial will take place at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart where military honors will be rendered.
