Obituary

Joseph L Yoder, 100 of Elkhart, Indiana has gone to his rest in the loving arms of a Heavenly Father whom he loved with all his heart, his mind and his soul on Wednesday December 29th at Hubbard Hill Estates. He was born February 15, 1910 in Johnson City, Iowa to Jacob and Rebecca Bontrager Yoder. In 1918 the family moved to a farm in Pigeon, MI. He came to Elkhart as a young man to work in road construction for his uncle J.C. Bontrager. In 1935 he moved to Flint MI and married Bethel Attridge that year. After the death of his wife in 1948, he and his daughter JoAnne moved to Elkhart to go into business with his two brothers in Yoder Ready-Mix Concrete Company. In the 60's, they started Yoder Asphalt and opened a ready mix plant in Middlebury, retiring in 1976. Joe married Joyce E Manges on October 27, 1950 in a ceremony performed by her father Rev Warren Manges at the Beulah Missionary Church. Surviving is his wife Joyce, children JoAnne B Yoder of Goshen, Julie D Yoder of Elkhart, Jeffrey M Ronda Yoder of Bristol, Jared N Kim Yoder of Fishers, IN, Janell D Dan of Oshkosh, WI; grandchildren Benjamin J Stacey Yoder of Nicholasville, KY, Amy S Yoder of Fishers, IN, Roman J Yoder of South Bend and Jori R Yoder of Bristol. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Monroe, Walter, Maynard, Andrew; sisters Minerva C Swartzendruber, Eva Troyer and Sadie Steiner. Joe was active in the Beulah Missionary Church as a Sunday School teacher, served on the Board of Deacons and Board of Trustees, and served on the board of Elkhart County Youth for Christ for many years. He traveled on several mission trips to Africa, South America and Hawaii. Joe never met a stranger. He used his listening skills to visit with members of the church who were not able to leave their homes to brighten their day. He was always willing to help and you didn't have to ask him twice. He was named Volunteer of the Year by the Council on Aging in 2002. Although he was often honored for his service to others, he truly never understood why he was being thanked for doing "what we're supposed to do." Though we grieve, our gratitude for the life he lived and the example he set will, for the entire family, be a legacy we will forever cherish. Memorials can be sent to Beulah Missionary Church, Bethel College, Missionary Church World Partners. Viewing will be on Sunday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Beulah Missionary Church, 57595 County Road 17 Goshen IN and on Monday from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. The funeral service will be on Monday at 11:00 at Beulah Missionary Church. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
