Obituary

Kathryn Jane Miller, 98, died at 1:25 a.m. Sun., Sept. 23, 2012 at her residence in Elkhart. Kathryn was born Oct. 8, 1913 in Elkhart to A.D. Frank and Marie (Gephart) Frank. In Elkhart on June 23, 1940, she married Frank E. Miller. He died on Nov. 17, 2001. She is survived by a son, Jay (Babe) Miller of Elkhart; a daughter, Linda Cram of Elkhart; five grandchildren, Danielle (Blaine) Nusbaum of Fishers, Derek (Diane) Cram of Brownsburg, Deverie Cram of Franklin, Brian Parnell of Cincinnati, and Shane (Harumi) Parnell of Carlsbad, CA; six great-grandchildren, Ashlie Cram, Kennedie Cram, Dayna Cram, Dylan Cram, Mya Nusbaum, and Max Parnell; and caregiver and longtime friend, Sandy Sherven of Elkhart. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Helen Manhart; and a grandson, Christopher Wainwright. Kathryn graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Journalism and was the first woman business editor of the Daily Northwestern. Since she was an avid reader, Kathryn was one of the founders of the 4-Arts Club of Elkhart. She also did volunteer work for St. Mary's College, The University of Notre Dame and the Elkhart General Hospital Auxiliary. Kathryn previously owned Kay Leasing. She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, the Elks/Christiana Creek Country Club, where she was a member of the bridge club; a founding member of Elcona Country Club; and an avid Notre Dame fan. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart, where a Rosary service will take place at 6 p.m. Friends may also call for a half hour prior to the 11:30 a.m. service Sat., Sept. 29, 2012 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1331 N. Main St., Elkhart. Burial will follow at Rice Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to The Elkhart County Humane Society or St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.
