Obituary

Lawrence G. "Larry" Jones, 78, of Elkhart, passed away at home, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Larry was born on February 8, 1946, in London, WV to the late Gilbert and Virginia (Withrow) Jones. He met his beautiful wife, Rose Becher, in October 1965 while working at a local gas station in River Side, WV. After a short courtship, Larry and Rose were married on July 8, 1966, at Larry's sister's home in Chesapeake, WV.

She survives along with two daughters, Ramona (Dave) Harper of Elkhart and Patricia "Patti" Jones of Ft. Wayne; grandchildren: Angela Davis, Derek (Amanda Bell) Davis, John (Shona) Harper, and Tony (Claudia) Harper; great grandchildren: Kaylee (A.J.) Kron, Jhonna Harper, Paige (Thomas) Harris-Harper, Taylor Harper, MacKenze Smead, Makala Smead, Austin Harper, Kaleb Davis, Nathalie Harper, Easton Bell, Carson Davis and Grayson Davis; one great-great grandson, Waylon Kron and a sister, Betty Woods of Chesapeake, WV. Also surviving is a great niece, Terri Lynn (Frank) Mullins of Winifred, WV, three great-great nieces, four great-great-great nieces, his beloved cats: Pickles and Henry, as well as many cousins.

Preceding him in death are a grandson, Billy Harper, a nephew, Alton "Buddy" Woods Jr., a brother-in-law, Alton Woods Sr., cats Crackers, Muffin, Mittens, and Peek-a-Boo and a dog, Buttons.

Larry and Rose moved to Elkhart in January 1967. Larry worked as a warehouse manager at Duo Fast in Elkhart from 1972 to 1987 before taking an early retirement in 1987 due to a disability. He attended the World Harvest Church in Elkhart as well as The Lighthouse. He enjoyed bowling in a league, golfing, and fishing in his younger years. Some of his other hobbies included adult coloring books and diamond art paintings, as well as spending time with his family. He was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Notre Dame fan. Even though Larry hasn't lived in WV for many years, one of his favorite foods was a "Hillbilly Hot Dog". He was also well known for the peanut butter fudge he made each Christmas.

Visitation for Larry will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 2 pm until 6 pm at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home where services will be held at 6 pm. The Rev. Eli Hernandez and Mr. Terry Martin will officiate. Cremation will take place and entombment will be at a later date at Rice Cemetery.
