Leland E. Markley, 98, of Goshen, formerly of Elkhart, passed away on Thursday, April 9. 2020 at Greencroft Goshen Healthcare.
He was born March 4, 1922 in Millersburg, IN to the late Roy M. and Lucille E. (Gardner) Markley. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Raymond R. Markley; three sisters: Bonnie Kenaga, Marilyn Geyer and Ann Hemminger and a son-in-law, Bill Dunlap.
On July 6, 1947, Lee married the former Deana Goetz in Elkhart and last year they celebrated 72 years of marriage. She survives along with three daughters: Rhonda Dunlap and Shelly (Tim) Randall of Elkhart, Lori Akey (Doug Friedrich) of Muskego, WI and a granddaughter, Madeleine Randall of Mesa, AZ.
Lee was valedictorian of his 1940 graduating class at Jefferson High School in Goshen. He was also active in sports, participating in both basketball and baseball. After graduation, he served with The Church of the Brethren Civilian Public Service for three and a half years before meeting his future wife on a blind date. He retired from NIBCO in 1985 after 39 years of dedicated service.
A long-time and active member of the Elkhart City Church of the Brethren, now Creekside Church of the Brethren; Lee served as the head usher as well as Deacon. He enjoyed playing softball for the C-Bee's in the Elkhart County Church League and at one time was also the Elkhart County Table Tennis Champion. He was an avid Notre Dame and Cubs fan, was passionate about the care and appearance of his yard and garden, but most of all enjoyed spending time with his family.
A private family graveside service will take place at the Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart, while a public Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
