Marguerite (Gardner)
Sailor
November 27, 1911 – January 22, 2017
Marguerite Sailor, 105, of Elkhart, was embraced by her Lord and Savior Sunday, January 22, 2017. Marguerite was born on November 27, 1911 in Jefferson Township to Harry and Nellie (Lynn) Gardner. She began her education in a one room schoolhouse and graduated from Goshen High School in 1931. At her father's dismay, Marguerite left the farm and became a travel mate and personal assistant to Mrs. Preston. After leaving Mrs. Preston's employment, Marguerite went to work at Kresge's Department Store at the Candy counter where she met her future husband, Charles. She married Charles, April 15, 1951 and became the mother of eight children that same day. Her life as a wife and mother was busy and full and became even busier on August 27, 1954, when she and Charles welcomed their son, Dana. After Charles' death, Marguerite went to work for Sautter's Greenhouse where her love of gardening and flowers flourished. Marguerite was a member of the YWCA Senior Center where she enjoyed quilting, helping with mailings, and taking many trips. Marguerite was a long-time member of Sugar Grove Church, where she served on various committees and provided flowers from her garden for the sanctuary. Marguerite lived a full and active life always serving others.
Marguerite is survived by loving son Dana (Cathy) Sailor, of Elkhart, devoted stepson's Ernest Sailor, of Wakarusa; Leon (Blanche) Sailor, and Flawn (Nancy) Sailor, of Elkhart; loving step-daughter-in-law, Wilma Sailor of OK; loving sister-in-law Lois Gardner, FL; Niece Kathleen (Bob) Masten, FL; grandchildren Dustin (Theresa) Sailor, of Goshen; Nathan (Jennifer) Sailor and Stacey Sailor, of Elkhart; 5 great grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; and 21step- great grandchildren. Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband Charles, brother Roy Gardner, step-children Elsie Goodsene; Clyde Sailor, Virgil Sailor, Dick Sailor, and Faye High, and step-grandchild, Michael High.
The family wishes to thank the Hubbard Hill community for their loving care. Without them, Marguerite would have never reached her milestone birthday of 105.
