Mary T. Checchio, 100, of Granger, formerly of Elkhart, died on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at BellTower Health and Rehabilitation Center in Granger.
She was born on December 20, 1925, in Elkhart to the late Joseph and Mary (Roberto) Borrelli. Also preceding her in death are a great great granddaughter, Madelyn, four sisters: Amelia Iavagnilio, Lillian Quarandillo, Rose Ronzone and Netta Borrelli and one brother, Tony Borrelli.
On October 29, 1949, she married Phillip J. Checchio in Elkhart. He died June 29, 1993. Mary is survived by a daughter, Lu Ann (Mike) Nate of Osceola, a son, Tony (Peggy) Checchio of Granger; eight grandchildren: Alicia, Tyler, Mike Jr., Tina, Tony, Todd, Scott and Nick; sixteen great grandchildren: Gabriella, Camila, Capri, Cal, Antonio, Alex, Olivia, Sophia, Miyu, Enzo, Coco, Trevor, Logan, Madison, Katelyn and Ashley and four great great grandchildren: Alainah, Auriana, Adeline and Lincoln. Also surviving are several beloved nieces and nephews.
Mary was a lifetime resident of Elkhart, a 1943 graduate of Elkhart High School and a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. A curious person by nature, she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and solving cryptograms. She loved to knit and crochet as well. Mary was a wonderful cook and made the best cookies! She was also very proud of her Italian heritage.
The family would also like to extend a special “Thank You” to the staff at BellTower for the loving care shown to Mary, along with a special “Thank You” to her devoted roommate and friend, Marilyn and her daily visitor and friend, Celeste.
Visitation for Mary will be held on Monday, July 6, 2026, at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am at church with the Rev. Nick Monnin officiating. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband at St. Vincent Cemetery. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mary may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church 1108 S. Main St. Elkhart, IN 46516.
