Obituary

Mary (Hisako) Henkin, 87 of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart on May 30, 2016. Mary was born in Japan on November 21, 1928 to Kamenosuke and Sadako Kumada. Mary moved to the United States in her early twenties. She was the loving wife and lifetime organizer of her husband, Daniel Henkin, who preceded her in death on November 8, 2012. Surviving here are a brother, Kenji Kumada of Tokyo, Japan and two sisters, Tadako Ikeda of Tokyo, Japan and Kiroko Kori of Chibaken, Japan. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a sister, Noriko Hoshi and an infant daughter, Mary. Mary was a longtime resident of Elkhart, moving here in 1963 to help Daniel expand his influence in the music industry through leadership at C. G. Conn, K. G. Gemeinhardt and several other musical instrument manufacturing companies. She loved the arts, music and gardening. Honoring her beloved homeland of Japan, Mary and Daniel designed an award winning Japanese garden behind their home on Greenleaf Blvd. Affectionately called "Crane Cove", this lovely space brought interest and awe to everyone who walked the breathtaking paths. Mary also spent many years offering a Japanese ritual tea service to friends and neighbors; thoughtfully integrating Japanese traditions into her Midwestern life. This obituary is lovingly offered by Mary and Danny's lifetime friends (and adopted family) Howard (1935-2012) and Beth Blackwood, Chris (Julie) Blackwood, Margaret (Dave) Bouwkamp, Tim (Jill) Blackwood, Joan (Michael) Blackwood and Annie (Chris) Schelle. We will miss you Aunt Mary. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 9th at 11:00 a.m. at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the Elkhart Botanical Wellfield Gardens 1011 N. Main St. Elkhart, IN 46516.
