Mrs. Naomi Esther Leatherman died peacefully on Friday, August, 19, 2016 at Scottish Rite in Des Moines, Iowa. She was 95.
Visitation will be held at Dunn's Funeral Home Tuesday, August 23 from 5-7 pm. Funeral services will be 10 am Wednesday, at Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines. Graveside services will be 11:00 am Thursday at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bristol, IN.
Born November 19, 1920, in Jolietville, Indiana, Naomi was the daughter of Reverend Edward and Gladyce Antle.Her father was a Methodist minister.
She graduated from Ball State Teacher's College and, in 1943, married the love of her life, J. Artley Leatherman, who was also a Methodist minister.
She would become his life partner in the ministry for nearly 65 years, until his passing in 2008, including joining him on missions to Great Britain, Scandinavia, and Jerusalem.
Their ministry included serving parishes in Washington, D.C.; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Detroit; and Des Moines.
In addition to raising four children, Naomi also served regularly as a substitute teacher, in music and English.She was active in the United Methodist Women's Group and PEO. Until recently, she also regularly played piano for Sunday services in her retirement home, Scottish Rite, and was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, where J. was pastor for 10 years.
In addition to her beloved husband, she is also pre-deceased by her brother, Benjamin Antle.
She is survived by her four children: Ruth (and David) Bushko, David (and Susan) Leatherman, Rebecca Leatherman (and husband Todd Ash) and Joanna Leatherman.She is also survived by six grandchildren: Ryan, John, Margaret, Katharine, Joshua and Briton. And six great grandchildren: Stephen, Abby, Bethany, Mia, Brooklyn and Harper.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Leatherman Scholarship fund c/o Dunn's Funeral Home or Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa.
