Olive H. Shaw, 96, residing at East Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Elkhart, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the facility.

Olive was born on December 14, 1920. On March 8, 1941, Olive married Paul T. Mathis, who preceded her in death on October 1, 1966.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter Rebecca, great-grandson Jacob, husbands, William Thompson, Donald Shaw, her parents Otto and Bessie, and sisters, Elinor, Lois, Rosemary, and Kathleen.

Olive is survived by her sons, Thomas Mathis (Sandra), Manning, SC, Ronald Mathis (Margo), Elkhart, Jeffrey Mathis, Dowagiac, MI and family friend Ernie Kurdys. Olive is also survived by five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Olive was a 1939 graduate of Elkhart High School receiving state and national cello honors. As an accomplished and gifted cellist, Olive preformed in local orchestras, as well as with trio and string quartet groups.

Olive was always able to balance both a work and family life, and was able to work well into her retirement years as a property manager along with her husband, Donald Shaw.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the 12 p.m. (Noon) memorial service Friday, June 9, 2017 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Grace Lawn Cemetery.
