Oscar Madrigal-Avalos, 14, of Elkhart, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Riley Children’s Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on August 10, 2012, in Elkhart, IN, to Francisco Madrigal and Bianca Avalos. Oscar is survived by his loving parents, Francisco and Bianca; his two sisters, Leilani Madrigal-Avalos and Kamila Madrigal-Avalos; and his two brothers, Nikolas Madrigal-Avalos and Theo Madrigal-Avalos.
Oscar was an active eighth-grade student at Jimtown Junior High School. He enjoyed all sports, but had a special passion for football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and track and field. A very competitive and loving boy, Oscar was guided deeply by his catholic faith. He knew there was nothing he could not overcome if he persevered. A straight-"A" student, Oscar was involved in much more than just sports; he was nominated for induction into the National Honor Society and was highly active in both his church youth group and the HOPE squad at school. He was always concerned with helping others and wanted to do whatever he could to put a smile on people's faces. Recently, he even took on lawn care work to start saving his own money. When he wasn’t practicing for sports, Oscar liked to play video games with his friends, and you could usually find him riding his low-rider bicycle or his long board around the neighborhood.
Visitation for Oscar will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the St. Vincent Catholic School Gymnasium. The Mass will begin at 11:00 am on Monday at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, with Father Craig Borchard officiating. Burial will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
