Obituary

Ralph A. Murphy, 93, of Elkhart, died Friday, April 15, 2016 at Hubbard Hill Estates. Ralph was born November 1, 1922 in Elkhart, Indiana to William Frank and Ruth M. (Bixler) Murphy. He married Louise Caskey on March 17, 1946. She preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 1969. He then married Betty (Bickart) Hill on Sept. 6, 1969. Betty preceded him in death on November 19, 2014. Ralph is survived by his daughter, Kathleen K. (Robert) Wall of Bristol; a step daughter, Sioux (Rik) Hill-Ayrea of Bloomington, Indiana; a step son, Timothy Hill of Bismark, North Dakota; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Jasmine) Wall, Sean (Jennifer) Wall, Kelly (Richard) Olsen, Scott (Alesa) Murphy, William (Maggie) Ayrea, Dylan Ayrea and, Camille Ayrea and six great grandchildren, Taylor, Kaitlyn, Ian and Meghan Wall, Andrew and Aidan Olsen. He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick K. Murphy on Oct. 4, 2008, sister, Rose Marie Bradley and four brothers, Robert Murphey, Harold Murphy, Charles Murphey and Dean Murphy. Ralph was a 1941 graduate of Elkhart High School. He was a member of the "Fighting Fifty" and the high school football team. Staff Sergeant Murphy proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Ralph loved God and country. Ralph was known as Murph, the Whistling Milkman, and worked for Grady's Milk Company. He was Elkhart's last milkman to have a horse and wagon. After fourteen years on the milk route, he began a 28 year career as a State Farm Insurance agent until he retired in 1984. His retirement years were spent golfing, spending the winters in Florida, walking, enjoying the people he met and most of all loving his family. Ralph was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and trustee. He was also a member of the Kane Masonic Lodge #83, Orak Shrine, Moose Lodge, Elks Country Club, Elkhart Jaycees and Junto Club. Friends may call from 1 pm until the 3 pm service, Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Hubbard Hill Estates with Reverend Tim Henke officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children or to the charity of one's choice.
