The Rev. Richard F. Dunn, 83, of Elkhart, died at home on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.
Dick was born August 16, 1937 in Port Huron, MI to the late Richard F. and Rose V. (Blantern) Dunn.
On August 16, 1961, Dick married the love of his life, Eva Jane Klett in Constantine, MI. Eva Jane died October 8, 2017.
Dick received his B.A. from Adrian College and then his Master's of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He also received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Piedmont College in Georgia. Dick served for many years as the director of The Renaissance Center at Elkhart General Hospital. After many years, he then became the chaplain at Elkhart General Hospital where he served until his retirement. He also served as the chaplain for the Elkhart Fire Department for many years.
An accomplished musician, Rev. Dunn served as the organist at First Congregational Church in Elkhart and had a vast knowledge of hymns and music in general. An incredible theologian, Dick was ordained in the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches. Rev. Dunn was also a life member of the NAACP, serving on the Executive Committee for many years. He and Eva Jane were both prolific readers and have a rather large collection of books in their home library.
Dick is survived by his brother, George R. Dunn of Elkhart.
A memorial service for Dick will be live streamed on Friday, April 2, 2021 at 4:00 pm through Zoom. The meeting ID number will be 852 9409 0284. The passcode will be 032151. The Rev. Izzy Harbin will officiate and Dick's cremains will be placed next to Eva Jane in the memorial garden at First Congregational Church at a later date. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
