Robert E. "Bob" Shaffer, 90, of Elkhart, died Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Elkhart Hospice House. Bob was born on April 16, 1925 in Olive Township, Indiana to Peter and Cleo (Harter) Shaffer. He married Audrey J. Metcalf on August 5, 1950 in Mishawaka. She survives. Bob is also survived by a daughter Debra Trovatore, Elkhart; son, Mike Shaffer, Elkhart; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 7 great, great grandchildren and a sister, June (Nelson) Mahaffa, Elkhart. Bob was preceded in death by daughters, Cindy Mott and Sandy Kasey Medina, a son, Jeff Shaffer, a granddaughter Dawn Casey Fritts, and brothers, William and Jack Shaffer. Bob was employed with Elkhart Rubber Works in the maintenance department for 36 years until his retirement. Bob proudly served in the US Army during WWII. He was in the 415th Infantry Regiment, 104th Timberwolf Division serving in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany. Bob was a member of the Hoosier "A" Ford Club, the Rinky Dink Cruisers, and the American Legion Post 74. Friends may call from 5 pm until 7 pm, Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home and for an hour prior to the 11 am funeral service, Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the funeral home with Reverend Laurence Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Cemetery where Military Honors will be rendered. Memorial contributions may be sent to the United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.
