Robert L. Kimes, Sr. 87, of Elkhart, died Monday, March 21, 2016 at Greenleaf Assisted Living Center. Robert was born on November 7, 1928 in Elkhart to the late A.F. "Al" and Beatrice V. (Fishley) Kimes. On August 29, 1953 he married Phyllis J. Climie. He later married Madelon Palumbo on October 12, 1963. She preceded him in death. On August 12, 1998 he married Jean P. (Waldref) Kimes. She survives with children Candi L. (Tom) Foy, Elkhart, Barbara J. (Tom) Gard-Janik, Ft. Wayne, and Robert L. (Julie) Kimes, Jr., Ft. Wayne; sister Kathleen Rowe, brother, Michael A. (Cindy) Kimes, Elkhart; step-children, Jennifer (Gary) Beck, Elkhart, Thomas (Colleen) Waldref, Oregon, Ann (Craig) Heitzman, Elkhart, Amy (Jerry) Faux, Jones, MI, Nancy (Todd) Kujawa, Bristol, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles L. Kimes and grandson Anthony S. Groom. Robert was a graduate of Elkhart High School and attended Indiana University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947 and later the U.S. Marines from 1950 until 1953. Robert was a fireman with Elkhart City Fire Department from 1960 until 1967. He was later employed as a purchasing agent with Robert Weed Plywood for 8 years until his retirement. Robert was a member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church, Bristol and attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He was a member of the Elks Christiana Creek Country Club and IARA. Friends may call from 4 pm until 7 pm, Monday, March 28, 2016 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am, Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at St. Vincent Catholic Church, where Robert was Baptized and Confirmed. Burial will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery, where military services will be rendered. Memorial contributions may be sent to St. Jude Children's Hospital or to Boys Town.
