Robert M. Mast, 72, of Elkhart, died Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Greenleaf Living Center. Robert was born on June 8, 1944 in New Rochelle, NY to Robert L. and Leanore (Cullen) Mast. Robert is survived by his longtime companion, Shirley Sonneborn; a sister, Nora M. Kasa of Elkhart; niece Jessica N. Kasa, and nephew Brock L. Kasa (Courtney), both of Elkhart, and a great niece. Robert was a 1962 graduate of Elkhart High School and graduated from Ball State University, where he earned his master's degree. Robert proudly served in the US Army. He was employed by The Elkhart Truth as a journalist and retired as a wire editor in 2001. Robert was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He also had memberships with AARP, the Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association, Catholic Solitaire, and was a Boy Scout. In his spare time, he enjoyed parachuting, traveling and being on the water, especially the local lakes, with Shirley. They managed to visit almost every state. Friends may call for an hour prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am, Thursday, August 18, 2016 at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Monsignor William Schooler officiating. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, where Military Honors will be rendered. Memorial contributions may be sent to Heartland Hospice or the Salvation Army.
