Robert L. "Bob" Slaughter Jr., 85, of Elkhart, died at 5:26 p.m. Friday, February 12th at his residence at Hubbard Hill Estates. Bob was born on February 9, 1931 in Charleston, IL to the late Robert L. and Virginia B. (Spence) Slaughter. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Schneider, and a sister, Roberta Shively. On September 1, 1950, he married Esther A. Hutchison in Frankfort, IN. She survives along with two daughters: Sharon Childers Slaughter of Aurora, CO; Susan (Charles) Moore of Bristol; a son, David (Lori) Slaughter of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren: Emily (Seth) Wright, Clay (Annie) Slaughter, Andrew Moore, Margaret (Matt) Davis, Alex Moore, Garrett (Lauren) Schneider and Meredith (Travis) Fulford; as well as four great-grandchildren. Bob earned a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master's degree in Secondary School Administration from Indiana University. He also earned a Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance from Purdue University. Bob's first teaching position was at Central Junior High School in Elkhart. He then taught briefly at West Side Junior High before moving on to Osolo Township Junior High School (which became Brookdale Junior High School). At Brookdale, Bob was a guidance counselor for one year prior to becoming principal, a position he held for fifteen years. After leaving Brookdale, he was the Activities Director at Elkhart Central High School until his retirement in 1991. Bob was a member of the Elk's Lodge #425, was a Free and Accepted Mason, 32nd degree Scottish Rite and attended church at Trinity United Methodist Church. Bob loved any activity that took him outdoors especially golfing, fishing, camping and hunting. He enjoyed reading and history, particularly Indiana history. Visitation for Bob will be on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 from 11 until the time of the memorial service at 1, all at the Hubbard Hill Chapel, 28070 C.R. 24 West in Elkhart. The Rev. Dave Severance, Chaplain at Hubbard Hill, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Commemorative Scholarship Fund c/o Elkhart Central High School, 1 Blazer Blvd. Elkhart, IN 46516 or to the Angel Garden Upper Patio Roof Fund at Hubbard Hill Estates.
