Obituary

Ronald F. Hansing, 93, of Elkhart, died at 1:57 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Greenleaf Living Center in Elkhart. Ron was born on June 30, 1923 in Kansas City, MO to Carl J. and Margaret (Fendler) Hansing. He was raised in Indianapolis and Elkhart. He married Betty Jean Nelson on June 8, 1946 in Elkhart and she died on November 2, 2013. Surviving are two sons; Ronald J. (Leisa) Hansing of Niles and Philip C. (Pam) Hansing of Elkhart: four daughters; Kristine (Thomas) Wyncott and Carol (Keith) Bontrager, both of Elkhart, Lois (Harry) Eggink of Muncie and Janet (Mark) Hess of Indianapolis; twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one sister, Barbara Carter of Lafayette. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lt. Carl L. Hansing and Lt. Richard Hansing, both of whom served in the U.S. Army Air Force in WWII. Ron served as a 1st. Lieutenant, bombardier with the 15th Air Force in Italy during WWII where he flew 21 missions over Southern Europe and Northern Italy in 1945. He was a 1941 graduate of Elkhart High School and received his BS in mechanical engineering from Tri-State University (now Trine University) in 1947 and his Professional Engineering License from the state of Indiana in 1954. During his engineering career, he was employed by The Kellogg Company of Battle Creek, MI and Evans Metal Products Company of Elkhart before working for the Bayer Corp. (formerly Miles Labs) in Elkhart for 31 years. He retired in 1982 as Manager of Plant Engineering, a position he thoroughly enjoyed. After retirement, he took a position as a Consulting Engineer by Standards International, Inc. of Chicago, IL for three years with one project taking him to England for one year. In 1988 he became an associate of T. R. Arnold, Inc. of Elkhart, doing engineering for the manufactured building industry until 2015, with international projects taking him to Romania and Israel. From age ten he was a member of and active in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Elkhart, serving in many leadership capacities. He instituted and led the Stephens Ministry Group of the church for ten years. Ron also was quite active in engineering societies. The American Institute of Plant Engineers (AIPE) elected him the National Plant Engineer of the year in 1977. He presented many technical papers on maintenance management topics to national meetings of the AIPE and to the American Management Association. He and Betty were members of the Mr. and Mrs. Club, the Winers and Diners Club and the Pioneer Trails Council. Active in the Boy Scouts of America where he served in many leadership roles, Ron was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest council award in 1976. He and Betty also loved to travel and visited many parts of the United States. They also traveled abroad, spending time with the Elderhostel programs and took tours to Europe, Greece, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. He also enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, canoeing, camping, oil painting and activities shared with the family. His great love was snow skiing and he was a valued member of the National Ski Patrol at Swiss Valley where he developed chair evacuation techniques. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, particularly his wife and his mother, for his enthusiasm, organizational skills, compassion and leadership ability. He was a man who loved life and valued family, relationships and above all, his faith. He will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12th from 4 to 8 at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Friends may also call from 10 to 11 on Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church where services will be held at 11. The Rev. Spencer Mielke will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund.
