Sandra L. Peffly Gordon, 80, of Elkhart, died on Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at Hubbard Hill Estates. She was born on July 8, 1935, to the late Cecil J. and Sylvia E. Kistler. On May 16, 1954, she married James J. Peffly. They were married for forty years before he died on May 26, 1994. Sandy later married Donald H. Gordon on June 17, 2000. He died on November 14, 2007.
Sandra is survived by two daughters, Sabrina Fritz of Angola and Cheri (Lorence) Howe of Goshen, and two step-sons, Robert (Kathy) Gordon of Naples, FL, and Ronald (Nancy) Gordon of Elkhart. She has five grandchildren, Tamara (Larry) Cronin, Darcy (Roberto Coney) Fritz, Ashley (Jennifer) Howe, Amy (Ryan) Bullock, and Lucas Howe. In addition, Sandra is survived by 9 great-grandchildren, and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister-in-laws Shelba (Loran) Bickle, Sharon Jennings, and Doris Kistler, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sandra was preceded in death by two brothers, Byron C. Kistler and Robert L. Kistler, three brothers-in-laws Paul Gordon, Ralph (Joyce) Gordon, and Richard (Eileen) Rohrer, as well as two stepchildren, Kevin D.Gordon and Karen J. Ferro.
Sandra was a 1953 graduate of Elkhart High School. She was a stay at home mom while her children were young, often helping at school and serving on the PTA. When she entered the workplace, she worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for several businesses in the Elkhart and Shipshewana area. They included: Oaklawn, Slabaugh, Cosentino, Walker, Shewmaker & Cohen Law Firm, Trendline Collision Center, The Christmas Haus, and the Village Trading Post. In her leisure time, Sandy enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, and attending sporting events to support family, friends, and her favorite teams. Sandra also volunteered many years as a Red Coat at Elkhart General Hospital.
Sandra was a life-time member of the Creekside (Elkhart City) Church of the Brethren. Over the years she was involved in many roles in the church, a Sunday School teacher, member of Church Board and various commissions/teams, and as a deacon. In addition to her local service, Sandy spent over 20 years volunteering on multiple service projects sponsored by Mennonite Disaster Service and Brethren Disaster Ministries. These took her across the United States, to Puerto Rico, and St. Thomas. She also volunteered at Camp Gilead in Polk City, FL, and Camp Mack, in Milford, IN.
Friends may call from 3-8 pm on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart, and one hour prior to the funeral service at 11 am, Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Creekside Church of the Brethren, 60455 County Road 113, Elkhart, IN.
Memorials may be given to the Creekside Church of the Brethren or Camp Mack, Milford, IN.
