Obituary

Shirley M. Hartnagel, 90, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at the Center for Hospice Care, Raclin House in Mishawaka.

She was born on January 31, 1936, in St. Louis, MO to the late Francis and Ida C. (Wienstroer) Hartmann.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Ralph Hartnagel III and a sister, Joyce Canon.

On March 31, 1958, Shirley married Ralph Hartnagel Jr.  Ralph passed away on April 26, 2012.  She is survived by a son, Gary (Connie) Hartnagel and children Maggie (Adam), Augie (Becca), Francie; daughter Karen (Dan) Oakley and children Katie (John), Caroline (Mitch), Ben (Heather); son Jeff (Kristen) Hartnagel and children Ryan (Phoebe), Steven; daughter Christine (Jeff) Wysong and children Nick (Jordyn), Drew (Claire), Allison; daughter in law Chris Hartnagel and children Brett (Heather), Justin (Bessie), and Michael (Madison).  Also surviving is a sister, Ruth Hoff a brother, Robert Hartmann and fourteen great grandchildren.

Shirley led a very active lifestyle and was an avid walker, hiker, ice skater, tennis player and pickleball player.  She traveled extensively with her husband Ralph, kids, grandkids and other family members, which often included hiking in National Parks, sailing on Lake Michigan and vacationing on Beaver Island, MI.  She was also involved in several Bridge and other game groups with her friends.  She also attended St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church for over 55 years.  Shirley loved watching her grandchildren participate in athletics and all of their activities.

Shirley was previously employed as the office manager for Davis Animal Hospital and Conrad Animal Hospital in Elkhart.

Visitation for Shirley will be held on Wednesday, May 13, from 4 pm until 7 pm at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 14, at 11:00 am at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church with Father Sam Anderson officiating.  Shirley will be laid to rest next to Ralph at St. Vincent Cemetery in Elkhart.
