Thomas G. Fackelman, 91, departed this life on November 24, 2008 in Lafayette, Indiana. Tom was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 22, 1917. He was the third of seven children born to Frederick C. and Loretta Welde Fackelman. When Tom was 10, the family relocated to Elkhart, Indiana where Tom attended St Vincent's Elementary School and Jimtown High School. He proudly served his country before and during World War II, where he was stationed at Pine Camp, NY, Camp Bowie, Texas, Camp Polk, Louisiana, England, France, Belgium and Germany with Patton's Army, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945.
Tom spent his career as a machinist, retiring from L & J Press with 31 years of service. He spent his retirement years with his wife at Stone Lake, Middlebury, Indiana until 2007, when he moved to West Lafayette, Indiana.
Tom was a devote Catholic. Over his lifetime, he was a member of St. Vincent's and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic churches in Elkhart; St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bristol and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Lafayette, Indiana. He was a wonderful grandfather, father, husband, friend and neighbor and will be missed by all who knew him.
Tom is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Franklin Fackelman of West Lafayette, Indiana; a son, Thomas F. Fackelman and wife Kathy, of West Lafayette, Indiana; a son Ernest J. Fackelman and wife Cynthia J. Skaar of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Jennifer Guiney and husband Derrick of Delphi, Indiana; his brother, Harold Fackelman and wife Dorothy of Mount Dora, Florida; his sister, Dolores Jamison, of Goshen, Indiana.; four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Robert, Frederick, Daniel, and Jeanne Kramer, and his grandson, Corey Fackelman.
The viewing will take place on Friday, November 27, from 4 PM to 7 PM at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home in Elkhart, Indiana. A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart, Indiana on Saturday, November 28 at 11 AM, followed by interment at Rice Cemetery,. A memorial service will be held later at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Lafayette, Indiana.
