Thomas DeWitt II, 67, of Elkhart, died Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Elkhart General Hospital.
Tom was born on October 21, 1948 in Springfield, IL to Thomas DeWitt, Sr. and Lena (Floyd) DeWitt.
Tom is survived by a daughter, Cara Gingerich (Gary), Elkhart; sons, Thomas DeWitt III (Kristen), Madison, IN, Matthew DeWitt (Mindy), Petersburg, IL, and Michael Hershberger (Dryscha), Goshen; 10 grandchildren and a sister, Rose-Marie Summers, Whitehall, IL.
Tom was preceded in death by sisters, June Antonacci, Etta Mae Robison, Ruth Nunn, and Evelyn Haggard.
Tom proudly served in the US Army as a Medic during Vietnam. Following his military service, Tom was a police officer for the City of Elkhart until his retirement in 2014.
He was a member of the FOP Lodge 52 and the VFW. Tom enjoyed his dogs and also rescued dogs. He was an outdoorsman, who loved camping, grilling, and shooting.
Friends may call from 1 p.m., until the time of service at 4 p.m., Monday, December 28, 2015 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman with the Elkhart Police Department Chaplin, Reverend Jim Bontrager officiating. Burial will take place with Military Honors at 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Elkhart County Humane Society.
