Vernon R. Reames, 85, of Elkhart, died at Elkhart General Hospital on Friday, September 17, 2021.

He was born August 23, 1936 in Elkhart, IN to the late Cecil and Helen (Smith) Reames.  He was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Paul Brown II and Jonathan Reames; a sister, Marion Rittenhouse and a brother, Melvin Reames.

On November 13, 1976, Vernon married Jeanette E. Payne.  She died July 23, 2019.  Surviving him is his blended family of: Brian Reames of Elkhart, Carol (Paul) Brown of Elkhart, David (Donna) Reames of Goshen, Linda (Conrad) Hillyer of Elkhart, Vernon (Lisa) Reames of Bristol, Louis (Christina) Feil of Elkhart, James (Janet) Feil of Port Orange, FL, John (Anne) Feil of Edwardsburg, Jesse (Marie) Feil of Westfield, Joseph Feil of Oklahoma City, OK, Linda (Keith) Ramsey of Plainwell, MI, Laura (Greg) Gallaher of Jupiter, FL: forty-nine grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Vernon retired from Sears where he was employed as a mechanic for over 30 years.  Never one to sit idle, he worked part-time as a courier for Heartland R.V. after his retirement.  He also served in the U.S. Army, was a member of the D.A.V. Post 19, the V.F.W. and the American Legion Post 143.  Vernon also enjoyed camping.  While he enjoyed woodworking in his spare time, he was more of an artist, creating many wonderful works of art for people to enjoy.

Visitation for Vernon will be held Monday, September 27, 2021 from 4 pm until 7 pm at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 am.  Burial will be at Prairie Street Cemetery where military honors will be rendered.
