William “Bill” Templin, 91, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia Mathias Templin and Wilbur “Bud” Templin; his stepmother, Karma Rodholm Ernst Templin; his stepbrother, Edwin “Bud” Ernst; his brother, Jon Templin; and his sister, Cynthia Segneri.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue “Sue” Dorenbusch Templin; his daughter, Cheryl “Cheri” Hacker (Dennis); and his son, Thomas “Tom” Templin (Shelley). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kevin Templin (Michelle), Eric Templin (Alison), and Brittany Hacker; and his four great-grandchildren, Sierra, Jenna, Benjamin, and Anneliese Templin. Bill is also survived by his stepbrother, Eric Ernst (Nancy) of Virginia, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Bill graduated from Elkhart High School in 1953 and went on to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business. While at Miami, he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity. He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1957 to 1963.

After college, Bill worked for Conoco Oil before joining his family’s business, Templin’s Music and Electronics, which had been operated by three generations of the Templin family. Bill worked there for 36 years until the business closed in 1999.

Bill was deeply committed to his community. He was a member of the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce and served as president of the Rotary Club of Elkhart. He served on the Board of Directors of Bashor Children’s Home and as its president. He also served on the finance committee at Trinity on Jackson Church.

His commitment to service extended to Habitat for Humanity, the Association of Fund-Raising Professionals, the Council on Aging, and the LaSalle Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Through these organizations and many other efforts, Bill found great fulfillment in giving back to his community and helping others.

Bill remained active and engaged throughout his life. He played tennis until his mid-eighties and was a member of the Brandy Boys, a private and informal tennis group. The group met on weekends for tennis matches followed by breakfast and brandy, which inspired its memorable name.

He also enjoyed spending time with his canoe group friends and was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan for 86 years.

Bill will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his love of community, his friendships, his sense of service, and the many ways he gave his time and energy to others.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Bill will be held at 12 noon on Friday, September 4, at Trinity on Jackson Church, 2715 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the church prior to the service. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

In honor of Bill, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity on Jackson, the Rotary Club of Elkhart Scholarship Fund, or Bashor Children’s Home.
