Antonia Kunderd Whitney, 100 years old, passed away the morning of Sunday, November 10, 2024 in Elkhart, Indiana. She was born on January 12, 1924 in Goshen, IN to the late Anthony Bryan and Lula (Brock) Kunderd.
She was a member of the class of 1942 at Concord High School, where she was the senior year vice president and graduated as salutatorian. She later went on to attend Indiana University, where she received a bachelor’s in fine arts with a focus on art history.
On June 27, 1948, Antonia was united in marriage to Robert Diener Whitney in Goshen, Indiana. They spent over 30 wonderful years together before his passing in 1979.
Along with her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Loa Fisher. Antonia is survived by her two sons, Robert (Kathleen) Whitney, Jr. of Minnesota and Jon B. (Julie) Whitney of Kentucky, as well as 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Antonia loved gardening, art, and art history. She had an amazing eye for color and form that probably started as a child on her grandfather’s large gladiola and peony farm. She enjoyed traveling and learning.
Antonia had a great love for her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Hartzler Gutermuth Inman Funeral Home, 403 W Franklin St, Elkhart, IN 46516. A funeral service will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral home, with Reverend Michael Wicks officiating. A graveside service will be held following the funeral at Rice Cemetery, Elkhart where Antonia will be laid to rest alongside her late husband.
