Arthur Garfield Fisher passed away on February 20, 2025, at Elkhart General Hospital, surrounded by love. He was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, on February 8, 1945, to the late Dorothy Mae Turner Fisher and Marvin Scott Fisher. In 1956, his family relocated to Elkhart, Indiana, where they became devoted members of St. James AME Church.
A hardworking and ambitious young man, Arthur was among the first Black paper carriers for the Elkhart Truth and worked as a grocery bagger at Wilt's grocery store while attending Elkhart High School, where he graduated in 1963. He was also an avid athlete, excelling especially in basketball.
On April 16, 1966, Arthur married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Ann Cade, to whom he was married for 55 years. Together, they built a life rooted in love, family, and community. After attending Goshen College, he began his career at Adams & Westlake, followed by a tenure of more than 25 years at Bayer (formerly Miles Laboratory). Even after retiring, his strong work ethic led him back to the workforce in 2021, when he joined Patrick Industries. He took great pride in his work and often shared stories about the friendships he built along the way.
Dedicated to his community, Arthur founded the Pierre Moran Neighborhood Association, where he served as President. His leadership was defined by a commitment to improving economic security, education, and the well-being of his neighbors. A highly respected figure, he left a lasting impact, inspiring others through his dedication and steadfast service.
Arthur was also honored to be part of the documentary What Happened at Benham West, which chronicled the experiences of residents in a predominantly Black neighborhood during the 1950s and 1960s. As a prominent voice in the project, he shared personal stories of segregation and his vision for a better future.
Above all, family was the heart of Arthur's life. He cherished every gathering, every meal, and every moment spent with loved ones. His legacy lives on not just in memory but in the deep connections he nurtured within his family. Arthur adored his role as a grandfather, making frequent trips to Indianapolis to support his granddaughters-whether watching Kristin run track or Taylir play softball. He traveled to Disney World to celebrate his great-grandson Kendal's fifth birthday.
Arthur's life was full of joyful passions. A die-hard sports fan, he was devoted to Notre Dame football since 1971, showcasing his love with a "Notre Dame Room" in his basement. He also passionately followed the Los Angeles Lakers, particularly the famed 1980s teams. A lifelong muscle car enthusiast, he proudly raced his 1967 Oldsmobile 442. Beyond sports and music, Arthur found peace in fishing— a pastime he often enjoyed with his father-in-law, Willie Davis. Those quiet moments on the water created some of his fondest memories, a time-honored custom of reflection and good storytelling.
Arthur was a man of tradition, ensuring that every holiday and birthday became a grand occasion. He especially loved Father's Day trips to Silver Beach, where he would barbecue while watching boats sail across Lake Michigan. A master on the grill, he was known for hosting epic cookouts any day of the week. With sharp wit and a lively spirit, Arthur was a natural entertainer. His legendary one-liners and playful banter during card games left everyone in stitches. His presence could light up any room, and his energy was simply unforgettable.
Arthur was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Ann (Cade) Fisher, M.Ed., and his two younger brothers, Luther and Clarence Fisher. He is survived by his two daughters, Tinya Fisher of Indianapolis, IN, and Triest Fisher of Elkhart, IN; two granddaughters, Kristin Baker (Kent) of Washington, D.C., and Taylir Christian, M.A. of Indianapolis; one great-grandson, Kendal Baker; and one great-granddaughter, Knox Baker. He is also survived by his sisters: Dr. Ruth Creary (Ludlow B. Creary, M.D., M.P.H.) of Los Angeles, CA; Irene Patterson, M.S.Ed., M.S.A., of Mishawaka, IN; Gwendolyn McCorvey (Michael) of Bellflower, CA, and sister-in-law, Robin P. Fisher, MBA (Luther) of Brea, CA, along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
May he rest in peace and praise, knowing he was deeply loved. His laughter and wisdom will remain with us forever. His legacy will undoubtedly continue a testament to a life well lived.
