Audrey J. Shaffer, 90, of Elkhart, died on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Greenleaf Health Campus in Elkhart.
Audrey was born in Mishawaka, IN on December 19, 1932, to the late Jack and Virginia (Vrabel) Metcalf. Also preceding her in death are two daughters: Cindy Mott and Sandy Kasey Medina; one son, Jeff Shaffer; a granddaughter, Dawn Kasey; two sisters, Nancy Sundman and Janet Metcalf and one brother, Larry Metcalf.
On August 5, 1950, Audrey married Robert E. Shaffer in Mishawaka. Bob died on January 16, 2016. Surviving is a daughter, Debra Trovatore; a son, Michael Shaffer, both of Elkhart; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren.
Audrey was a long-time employee at Elkhart General Hospital where she worked as a registered nurse. She spent time working in almost every department at the hospital. If there was a need for help, you could count on Audrey to help out.
After her retirement, Audrey spent time volunteering wherever there was a need. She was a Pink Lady at Elkhart General Hospital and also volunteered at Susanna’s Kitchen. A graduate of Jimtown High School and a member of the Alumni Association, Audrey was also a graduate of Ivy Tech where she received her LPN and then South Western Michigan College, where she received her registered nursing degree. She was also a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Elkhart. She enjoyed sewing and knitting but above all else, she enjoyed lighthouses and traveling to see them with her family.
Visitation for Audrey will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 4 pm until 7 pm at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home and one hour prior to the 11 am service on Wednesday, August 9th at Calvary United Methodist Church in Elkhart. The Rev. Laurence Smith will officiate services and burial will be at Olive Cemetery in Elkhart County.
