Betty Hazel Vaughn, 101, of Elkhart, died on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
She was born December 3, 1923, in South Bend, IN to the late Glen and Ruby (Holston) Yost. Also preceding her in death are a daughter, Vicki Lynn Vaughn, who died at the age of 21, a sister, Audrey Petty and three brothers, Kenneth Yost, Raymond Yost and Richard Yost.
Betty married her World War II pen pal, James R. Vaughn on January 25, 1947, at the Willow Creek Methodist Church in Mishawaka. Jim died April 15, 2011. She is survived by three daughters: Susan Jane Holmes and Sandra Jean (David) Pixey and Judith Ann (Lawrence) Boynton; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren, with 2 more on the way.
Betty was a 1941 graduate of Mishawaka High School and was employed by The Associates Investment Company for ten years. She has been a member of the Delta Theta Chi Sorority since 1944 and was instrumental in re-instating the Elkhart Eta Chapter in 1954 when she moved to Elkhart. She has been a member of Trinity on Jackson (formerly Trinity United Methodist Church) for over 60 years. She enjoyed dancing with her husband in the Athenian Room at the old Hotel Elkhart, where she served as chairwoman of The 40 Club for two years. She was also a past member of The Four Arts Club. Betty enjoyed fishing with her husband and friends in Hayward, WI and traveling with her husband and their 33rd degree Masonic friends.
Friends may call from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 14th, 2025, at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A procession will leave the funeral home after visitation for a graveside service at Rice Cemetery, where Betty will be laid to rest with her husband, James. The Rev. Lori Grasty of Trinity on Jackson will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Betty may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children 2211 North Oak Park Ave. Chicago, IL 60707-3392.
