Chanxay “Cy” Sayavongsing, 68, of Edwardsburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2023, at Elkhart General Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Cy, as he was known, was born March 10, 1955, in Vientiane, Laos to the late Boualiane and Bounhome Sayavongsing. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and seven sisters.
In 1977, Cy married Thongkao “Nat” Champanakone and together they celebrated 46 years of marriage.
In 1985, in a valiant attempt at a better life for his family, he and his family of four migrated from refugee camps in Thailand and the Philippines to the United States. Once there, they settled in Edwardsburg, MI in 1994 where they began raising a family of three children; Oudalai (Randy) Amyuni, Oudalin Sayavongsing, deceased and Philip Sayavongsing. Cy especially loved spending time with his five grandchildren: Benji, Quinn, Asia, Miko (deceased) and Cody. He was happiest when the entire family gathered at the house to eat traditional Laos food and spend time together.
Cy and Nat love to garden both flowers and vegetables. Their lovely home was adorned with the most beautiful flowers, many from Southeast Asia. The vegetable garden was filled with traditional vegetables as well as vegetables from the homeland and they were always happy to share the bounty with family and friends.
Cy worked at the Robert Weed Corporation, retiring in 2021 where he was honored for his years of exemplary service.
A traditional Buddhist service will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Cremation will follow services.
