Charles J. Walker

Charles J. Walker, 97, of Elkhart, IN passed away the evening of Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Elkhart General Hospital.

Charles was born on September 9, 1927 in Elkhart to the late Charles William and Jessie Belle Walker. On September 3, 1949, he was united in marriage to Anne L. Walker. They remained married until her passing in 2005.

Charles bravely served his country during World War II as a Marine, and also as a combat infantry officer during the Korean War. He remained a proud member of the VFW until his passing. He was also very athletic, playing basketball and baseball until his mid-thirties. He was a great tennis player and won the city tennis championship several years in a row. He also ran the park department’s tennis program for many years. He worked as a school teacher and principal for 39 years until his retirement. When he wasn't working, Charles enjoyed spending time with his family, especially backpacking with Anne and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also a wonderful woodworker and enjoyed restoring furniture.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife Anne as well as his sister, Alice Long.

Charles is survived by two sons, Charles J. Walker, Jr. and Kris (Kathleen) Walker, as well as two grandchildren, Shannon Nicole Walker and Patrick Liam Walker.

Charles was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Hartzler Gutermuth Inman Funeral Home, 403 West Franklin Street, Elkhart, IN 46516. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM the following day, Wednesday, March 26, 2025 also at the funeral home. Charles will be laid to rest at Prairie Street cemetery beside his wife, Anne.
