Claire Louise Luther, 89, of Elkhart, died Wednesday afternoon, April 24, 2019 at Elkhart General Hospital.
Claire was born to the late Charles J. and Hazel V. (Howe) Fitzpatrick in Providence, RI on March 16, 1930.
Claire married William C. Luther on May 24, 1948 in New Hampshire. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William C. Luther and her son, William C. Luther Jr.
She is survived by her four daughters; Kathy H. Luther of Ft. Wayne, Susan L. (Stephen) Criscenzo of Durham, NC, Karen Luther of Warwick, RI, Candace Luther of Elkhart; a daughter-in-law, Judy “Scotty” Luther of Plainfield, IN; five grandchildren: Matthew, Daniel and Allison Criscenzo and Marissa and Zoe Sprouls. Also surviving are two sisters; Virginia Bainton of Warwick, RI, Carol (Jack) Elliott of North Providence, RI and several nieces and nephews.
Claire graduated from high school in Providence, RI and attended Brown University before graduating from Indiana University with a B.A. in English. She has lived in Elkhart since 1960. A founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Elkhart, Claire was active in the community serving as a Brownie leader and as a member of the Elkhart General Auxiliary, the Athena Club, the Midwest Museum of American Art, Matinee Musicale, Elcona Country Club and the Elkhart County Medical Auxiliary.
In her free time, Claire enjoyed golf, tennis, curling, crossword puzzles and international travel.
Visitation for Claire will be held on Saturday, April 27th from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. There will be no funeral service.
