Clara E. (Gongwer) Myers, 98, went home to be with the Lord on April 15,2020 at her home.

She was born in Elkhart November 24, 1921 to Vernon and Joye (Swarm) Gongwer.

She married the Rev. Harold R. Myers on December 31, 1938, and he precedes her in death September 3, 2002. They were married 63 years.

Clara is survived by three children, Larry Myers of Columbus, Ohio, Ronnie Myers of Elkhart, and Nancy (Bert) van Eyk of Elkhart; three grandchildren, Aaron (Kristy) van Eyk of Goshen, Rachel (Jon) Dennings of Blacklick, Ohio, and Elizabeth van Eyk of Elkhart; seven great-grandchildren, James, Brookelyne, Johanna and Irelynne van Eyk; Emma, Ava and Leah Dennings; and a sister June Stuntz of Bremen.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Albert, Lowell, Dewey and Glenn.

In the early years of her marriage, she traveled with her husband as he held evangelistic meetings and then pastored various churches. She was also a Sunday School teacher for children’s classes.

She was a stay-at-home mom while her children were young with the exception of a period of time when her husband was ill and couldn’t work. Clara did bookkeeping for several area businesses as well as Grace Baptist Church, many years ago, while she also raised her children.

She was an excellent seamstress and had a green thumb and could grow or nurse back to health any plant or flower. She took pride in her beautiful flower beds.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and later her great-grandchildren. She was a long time member of Northside Baptist Church.

A private graveside service will be held at Olive Cemetery East. A Memorial Service will be at a later date. Pastor Carl Henry will officiate.

Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be given to Northside Baptist Church, 53198 C.R. 9 North, Elkhart, In, 46514.
