Deloris Max Obituary

Deloris C. “Dee” Max, 81, of Elkhart died December 8, 2020 at Trinity Place in Mishawaka. Deloris was born on April 23, 1939 in Cedar Grove, West Virginia to William and Gertrude (Kauff) McGraw. She was one of ten children.

Left to cherish Deloris’ memory are her four daughters, Carol (Keith) Logan of Elkhart; Diana (Dave) Baker of Syracuse, IN; Angela (Steve) Deese of Douglasville, GA; and Fonda (Tony) Arroyo of Cassopolis, MI; 14 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death is her son, Lionel Herdman; granddaughter, Jessica Shultz, and grandson, Tony “Bubba” Arroyo.

In 1992 Dee and Dick opened The House of Herbs in Dunlap and operated it until three years ago.  She and Dick were also faithful members of the Kiwanis Club of Elkhart with Dee being a member for 23 years.  Together, they traveled all over the world in order to attend Kiwanis International conventions, making sure that their club was represented.

To say Dee loved to travel is an understatement. She and Dick were married on a Southern Gospel cruise ship on October 27, 1986 somewhere between Miami and the Bahamas. Dee enjoyed her 28 big ship cruises, visiting the islands in the Caribbean.  She traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia, spending time in Taipei, China, Singapore, and Bangkok. Dee sailed through the Panama Canal and enjoyed the countries of Central America. They visited Mexico frequently and purchased three time shares. Dee and her husband had the wonderful privilege of visiting all 50 United States. Her favorite vacation destination, however, was in Puerto Rico.

Visitation for Dee will be on Monday, December 14th from 11 am until 12 noon at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. A private family service will be held with a public graveside service taking place on Monday, December 14 at 1:30 PM at Olive Cemetery.
